If there is one thing in common amongst African Americans, whether they are your average citizen or famous Hollywood celebrities and music artists, which would be their hairstyle.  Most of them are sporting African American hair braiding styles.  This particular style was popularized by African Americans themselves that's why it's common for them to sport this kind of look.  However, cultures have diversified and nowadays, you don't have to be African American to be donning on African American hair braiding styles.  Most people think that this hairstyle is high-maintenance.  Well, you would be surprised that it's not.  Getting it done does take some time.  However, once done, you can skip the salon trips for a month.  That's a lot of time and money saved.

African American Hair Braiding Styles

African American hair braiding styles can be done on people with short or long hair.  There is a style that will fit your hair length.  If you are looking at changing your look, you can consider getting any one of these African American hair braiding styles done:

Cornrows.  This is perhaps the most basic hair braiding hair style.  To get this done, the hair is braided tightly close to the scalp.  Care is taken to make the braids form a neat and stable row.  To achieve this, the tension of each twist must be equally distributed from the roots to the end of the braids.

African Braid Hairstyles

Pixie Braids.  These are often referred to the invisible braids because these are made to be very small.  To do this particular style, your hair has to be healthy.  Dry and brittle hair can only end up damaged if this is done.

Box Braids.  This is perhaps the most difficult to do.  Instead of one, it requires two hair stylists to get it done and because of its complexity, it takes the longest to complete.

Natural Hair Braiding

Caring for braided hair is simple.  All you need is a good shampoo and a protein rich conditioner.  These will keep your hair and your scalp healthy.  To avoid your braids to become frizzy, wrap your hair with a scarf while you sleep. If you are seriously considering in getting one done for yourself, consult a salon professional to evaluate the condition of your hair and your scalp and determine if they can be braided or not.  This particular hairstyle is meant to make you stand-up by looking great.  It will not achieve that effect if your hair would look “damaged” if it was “forced” into a hairstyle that it could not handle.
